The first new nuclear units in the United States in over 3 decades, Vogtle Units 3 & 4 are a critical carbon-free strategic energy resource. As the HVAC subcontractor SSM fabricated and installed more than 18,000 pieces of ductwork, the majority being welded construction and more than 8,000 duct supports, including seismically designed and qualifed duct and supports. Complex welded ductwork supports presented a unique challenge and opportunity. Preassembly of many supports saved thousands of field hours. All fabrication took place at SSM’s Pittsburgh shop. Every fabrication weld was inspected and documented by SSM’s quality control. During installation, SSM field quality control inspected all installation welds and performed leak testing on critical systems prior to turnover to customer. This scope of work was performed under SSM’s Industrial Quality Control program meeting all Westinghouse AP1000 design, fabrication and installation requirements.
